Daoism played a substantial role in ancient Chinese culture, government, medicine, art, and everyday life. Daoism, following its emergence as a more solidified philosophy/religion, grew in following which in turn increased its impact on ancient China. Daoist temples and shrines are still seen throughout eastern Asia, located mostly in forests, river heads, and mountains. Unlike Confucianism and Legalism, Daoism’s role in governing was not nearly as tangible or impactful, due to its anarchical nature, but because of Daoism’s popularity, governing structures for many villages and regions were integrated with Daoist thought.
